Originally, all trucker hats had a mesh panel at the back. In fact, it’s part of what made the style so popular with truckers because it helped them to keep cool when spending long days driving. Before they gained popularity with truckers, they were originally known as feeder caps because they were given away as freebies by animal feed companies.

The trucker cap gets its name from the people who popularized it: long-haul truck drivers. In the 1970s, agricultural supply companies realized that caps made great mobile billboards, so they started giving away mesh-back caps with their branding on the front.

The primary distiction between 6 and 5 panel hats is in the way the crown is constructed. 5‑panel hats have one singular panel across the front of the hat. 6‑panel hats have the front split into two panels.
