What is a panel on a hat?
Hat panels are the triangular fabric segments that make up the crown of structured cap styles such as basketball caps. The number and size of these fabric pieces give different hat silhouettes their distinctive forms.
For example:
- 5‑panel hats have 5 triangular fabric segments sewn together to create the cap structure crown. This gives a more rounded dome shape.
- 6‑panel caps add slightly smaller front panel pieces for a boxier, prominent front-facing profile.
- Unstructured caps may forgo multiple structured panels for a collapsed crown look.

Can you make unstructured 6‑panel caps?
We build 6‑panel unstructured hats with no buckram behind the front panels, so the crown sits soft and low. Washed or pigment-dyed cotton pushes the relaxed look further, and a modest stitched wordmark suits that front better than a large logo.
Can you build a vintage-look 6‑panel cap?
