All you need to know: fitted hat size chart
What is a fitted hat?
A fitted hat is a cap style that is made to fit the wearer’s head exactly. Where other hats use a snapback closure or some other mechanism that allows for size adjustments, fitted hats are made to measure. Some fitted hats have elastic, which allows them to accommodate a small range of head sizes; these are known as flexfit hats.
How many types of fitted hats are there?
Fitted hats come in many styles, each with its own unique characteristics:
- Baseball caps: the most common type of fitted hat with a rounded crown and a stiff brim.
- Fedoras: classic hats with a creased crown and a brim that can be worn up or down.
- Newsboy caps: clat caps with a rounded crown and small, stiff brim at the front.
- Bowler hats: rigid, rounded crowns with a short, curled brim.
- Camper hats: five-panel hats with a flat brim, often made of lightweight materials.
- Dad hats: unstructured baseball caps with a curved brim and relaxed fit.
Trucker hats: baseball-style caps with a foam front and mesh back for ventilation.
How to choose the perfect size of fitted hat
To get the correct size of the hat, you need to know the exact size of your head. Here’s what to do:
- Measure your head circumference. A flexible tape measure provides the most accurate measurement. If you don’t have one, use a piece of string and measure it against a ruler afterward. Place it just above your ears and across your forehead. This is where the hat will sit.
- Wrap it around your head correctly. Place the tape or string just above your ears and across your forehead.
- Measure multiple times. Take at least three measurements. Your results might vary slightly each time, so taking an average is the most accurate.
- Keep the tape loose. Don’t pull the tape too tight. You want some extra room in your hat, so keep the tape comfortably loose when measuring.
- Leave some space. When trying on a hat, you should be able to fit about a finger’s width between your head and the hat to get comfort without the hat being too loose.
- Check the size chart. Look at the hat size chart. It will show you which hat size matches your head measurement.
- Try it on. When you get your hat, put it on. It should feel snug but not tight. You want about a finger of space between your head and the hat.
Know your head shape. Heads come in different shapes. Some hats might fit better than others based on your head shape.

Fitted hat size chart FAQs
What is the average head size?
The average adult head size falls between 22 – 23 inches (56 – 58 cm) in circumference. For men, the average hat size is 7 3⁄8, while for women it’s 7 1⁄4. However, there are slight variations across populations and individuals.
Do fitted hats shrink over time?
Fitted hats can shrink slightly over time, especially if exposed to heat or moisture. Cotton hats tend to shrink more than polyester, so check care instructions for your specific hat.
What is considered a big hat size?
Hat sizes above 7 5⁄8 (61 cm) are above average size. The biggest standard hat sizes typically go up to 8 (64 cm). Individuals with larger head circumference may need custom-fitted hats for a proper fit.
How can I use hat sizing tape?
Hat sizing tape, also known as a hat size reducer, is a foam strip with an adhesive backing used to adjust the fit of a hat. To use it, cut the tape into smaller strips, place them under the sweatband in areas where the fit feels loose, and press down firmly. This method provides exact measurements and gives a more customized fit without altering the hat’s structure.
