The megachurch industry has changed irrevocably in the past decade, with its key demographic having grown much younger. What was once predominantly comprised of “baby boomers” with children has now become “baby busters,” resulting in a much more contemporary style of worship.

Furthermore, over two-thirds of congregants have attended their chosen mega church for less than five years, while traditional church congregants have attended for more than ten.

In terms of the environment and worship style in megachurches in the United States, technology is prevalent, as well as a wide variety of artistic expressions of worship, such as dance and drama.

Megachurches tend to be defined by their senior pastor, with this pivotal person bringing the congregation together and ensuring the survival of the church.

We have also seen an increased focus on diversity, with 58% of megachurches in the country having a minority presence in their congregation of 20% or more. Moreover, there is more emphasis on ethnic and socio-economic diversity.

What does all this mean for the Christian megachurch industry?

To put it simply, times are changing, and if you want to remain relevant, you and your organization need to change with them.

Industry Challenge

As mentioned briefly above, the commitment of the congregation to megachurches, even the biggest megachurches, is precarious, to say the least, which means that you need to work even harder to maintain loyalty and ensure the success of your worship services.

As a generation, baby busters are much more likely to take responsibility for their own beliefs rather than letting an organization define them. This means that if their needs are not being met by their current church, they will have no issue leaving and seeking out a church that does.

That being said, the younger generation of worshippers is more likely to be loyal to an individual rather than an organization, which means that the role of the pastor is even more crucial.

If you think about “what is a megachurch,” it’s its size that differentiates it from a traditional church. In fact, according to the Hartford Institute for Religion, a church has become a megachurch once it has sustained a weekly average attendance of 2,000 people or more. Between 2014 and 2019, 74% of megachurches in the United States grew in attendance, equating to thousands of new attendees per congregation.

While this may seem like a good thing for the megachurch industry, this growth makes it more likely for your members to get lost in the crowd and not feel a true connection to your church.

Fortunately, there is a simple solution to ensure your congregation feels connected and loyal to your organization: custom merch.

Becoming increasingly popular for megachurches across the United States and with the ability to transform your average weekly attendance and make you one of the largest church organizations in your area, elevation merch is just what you need to take your megachurch to the next level.

Here at Anthem Branding, we are ready and waiting to help you stay one step ahead of the latest megachurch trends with our bespoke godly merch and unique custom shirt designs.
